Lusaka City

Lusaka is Zambia’s administrative and main business city. It has a wide range of accommodation options for both leisure and business travellers. Many tourists will find Lusaka a good stopover point for a day or to before or after their safari into one of the Zambia’s game rich national parks.Below are some of the accommodation options found in Lusaka; please note that there are other lodges, hotels and camps that have not yet been included on our site but they are on our list of places we recommend and sell.

Chaminuka Lodge

This used to be a private home but was turned into a guest lodge in the mid 1990’s. The main building is set on top of a hill overlooking a large dam and offering extensive views of the countryside around. It is fairly convenient for overnight stays, just 25 minutes from the airport on dirt roads though and it makes continue to feel that you are your safari. It also means that you don’t have to bother with the hustle of Lusaka traffic and noise.

Game-drives and walks are possible within the property as it is a game-farm; although not as wild as the

National Parks your guests will have been visiting, this place still offers a peaceful ambiance and the birdlife is good. The owners of the property, the Sardanis family are art collectors and patrons having supported and sponsored many of Zambia’s best artists past and present. The main house contains Zambia’s finest privately owned art collection and there are sculptures throughout the gardens.

Eight Reedbuck Hotel

This is one of the few recent additions to the options for accommodation in Lusaka and is the only boutique-style hotel in town. It is set in the quiet residential area of Kabulonga and comprises just 10 suites. Each suite is large and stylishly furnished taking the theme of one of Zambia’s main tribes.

This is a good place for personalised service on a first name basis when staying in any of the Lusaka based hotels; the gardens are small but carefully laid out giving one the illusion of more space.

  • 10 air-conditioned suites with satellite TV, min bar, tea & coffee making facilities
  • Wireless internet
  • Cocktail bar and restaurant,
  • 24 hour room service,
  • Board room available for small executive meetings
  • Fitness suite

Intercontinental Hotel

A large hotel meeting international 5 star standards, there is a large pool and the main restaurant is set alongside it providing standard fare. There is another smaller restaurant called the olive grove offering a high standard of dining.

This hotel is priced slightly higher but we think that the rates match with the high service standard.

  • Health and fitness centre on site plus a spa
  • Conference facilities available
  • Swimming pool and gym
  • Road transfers 25 minutes from Lusaka Airport

The Taj Pamodzi Hotel

This hotel is one of the few 5 star hotels in Lusaka. The hotel underwent a complete re-furbishment in 2007 and was greatly improved, it is well suited to families who want their children close to hand; whilst they do not put 3rd beds into their rooms, they can offer inter-leading rooms which work very well for families.

  • Swimming pool and gym as well as spa
  • Road transfers – 30 minutes from Lusaka Airport
  • Conference rooms and facilities available

Protea Arcades Hotel

This hotel is about the only one in Lusaka from which guests can walk out under their own steam from the hotel and get a bit of Zambian life. It is set at the back of the Arcades shopping mall and there are several restaurants, bars, shops and even a cinema within a minute’s walk from the back entrance of the hotel.

The hotel itself is a decent 3 star hotel. It is important to know that when checking in if you are given a room on the first floor you must ask to be given a different room if availability allows, to avoid the direct noise from one of the nights clubs within Arcades. Rooms on all other floors do not suffer from the sound pollution!

  • Wireless internet service,
  • Tea and coffee making facilities
  • 15 minutes road transfer from Lusaka airport

Southern Sun Ridgeway Hotel

This is one of Lusaka’s older hotels although it has undergone a complete renovation recently and now is a very pleasant 4 star hotel. The restaurant and sitting area is in a central courtyard type affair set around a fishpond containing fish and a few small crocodile as well.

  • Wireless connection (extra charge)
  • Conference rooms and facilities available
  • Swimming pool and gym
  • 25 minutes from Lusaka Airport

Pioneer Camp

Pioneer is set outside of town to the north east; it is 25 minutes drive from the airport and ideal for those budget conscious guests that are simply over-nighting before an early flight departure. It is simple by design with 11 modest chalets set in bushy surroundings; it certainly offers more of a safari lodge feel to it than any of the town based hotels although there is no wildlife in its surrounding areas.

  • 9 en-suite thatched chalets and a 2 bed-roomed cottage
  • Family chalet sleeps three with shared shower and washroom
  • Open all year round
  • Children welcome
  • Swimming pool
