Located in the Mfuwe area, just outside the gates into South Luangwa National Park, Flatdogs Camp focuses on value, its standards have improved considerably over recent years; it is now a comfortable safari camp that should appeal to many different types of traveller.
Flatdogs is a bigger property (taking up to 44 guests) than most of the camps in the South Luangwa area, and guests are not ‘hosted’ here – so visitors take their meals independently.
Set around a central courtyard, the main areas at Flatdogs Camp sport simple wooden furniture polished stone floors and muted safari tones. The open-sided restaurant is open throughout the day, with tables under cover or outside beneath shady umbrellas. Both those on a full-board rate and those staying independently select from a varied à la carte menu.
A separate open-side area incorporates the well-stocked bar, which has both high wooden bar stools and a number of comfy sofas.
The large and crystal-clear swimming pool is surrounded by sun loungers and there are various shady spots to sit and read, or take in the sounds of the bush. The pool isn’t fenced so if you’re going for a dip, be sure to check first for any hippos or crocodiles! Flatdogs Camp also has a small shop stocked with curios, books, the odd piece of clothing and essentials such as sun cream and toothpaste. You’ll find a few computers with internet access here, too, and there is WiFi in the courtyard area, both available at extra cost.
Activities from Flatdogs Camp include day and night safari drives in open-topped Toyota Landcruisers, which seat a maximum of six people in three rows. They also offer walking safaris accompanied by a guide and armed scout, usually during the drier months between about June and October.
Just like in other safari camps, the morning activity starts at about 6.00am, when the park opens, returning to camp at around 10.00am. Then the afternoon activity leaves after tea at about 4.00pm and returns to the camp around 08.00pm. During your afternoon game drive we stop for sundowners in the bush to fully experience the magnificent African sunsets. You continue with the drive in the dark which allows you to spot nocturnal animals. With advance notice day trips (with a packed lunch) can be arranged for a minimum of four people.

Day 4 to Day 6 – Zambezi Sun Hotel
The 3-star Zambezi Sun is a sprawling resort hotel with an informal atmosphere, and a colourful, fun design throughout. The closest hotel to the Victoria Falls, it’s really all about the location as you’re just a few minutes walk from one of the Natural Wonders of the World.
The hotel has a total of 212 rooms, which are very comfortable. Built over two levels, the rooms are either pool or garden facing. The ground floor rooms having a sliding door that opens up directly onto the grounds, while the 1st floor rooms each have a balcony.
With walls painted in funky, geometric designs – a mix of earthy tones and some brighter colours – most of the standard rooms have either twin or double beds, although there are also rooms with two doubles, which are suitable for families with young children. All have a television, tea and coffee making station, a telephone and an electronic safe. The en-suite bathrooms, with a bathtub, separate shower, toilet and washbasin. Soap, shampoo and moisturizer are also provided.
At the centre of the hotel is a huge, curving swimming pool with sun loungers and umbrellas dotted about on the grass. Adjacent to the pool is an al fresco café and bar, with the main restaurant just beyond.
On the sprawling property, just a few minutes from the main hotel complex, is also the Falls Entertainment Centre. Here you’ll find an informal a la carte restaurant, a small café, a few craft and souvenir shops, as well as an activity centre – which is also generally a pick up point for many of the activities such as white water rafting etc.
Many of the numerous activities available at the Falls can be booked and paid for prior to your arrival at the hotel, but there is an Activity Desk at the hotel reception where these can be arranged locally and added to your bill to be paid for at the end of your stay.
It’s just a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel to the Falls themselves, open between 6am and 6pm daily. Entrance to the Falls is included for guests staying at the Zambezi Sun, and you can visit as many times as you like! There are also three nature trails on the property – and don’t be surprised to come across zebras, giraffe or even impala. They’re quite used to people, but do keep a respectful distance as they’re still wild animals.
Day 6 – Transfer from Livingstone to Chobe National Park
At some stage on this day, you will get onto a road transfer from Zambezi Sun Hotel in Livingstone to Chobe Safari Lodge in Chobe National Park.
On arrival at Chobe Safari Lodge, the staff will welcome you and check you into the room – your stay at this lovely lodge will be for 2 nights.
Day 6 to Day 8 – Chobe Safari Lodge
Chobe Safari Lodge is a large, international style lodge/hotel, situated in the town of Kasane in north east Botswana. As one of the first lodges built in Kasane, it has a prime spot next to the Chobe National Park, overlooking the wide Chobe River.
Set in well tended and pretty gardens are the lodge’s 46 safari rooms, 22 of which are riverside rooms and 8 are rondavels. The safari rooms are the newest addition to the lodge and have air-conditioning, TV, en-suite bathroom and private patios. The river rooms have similar facilities to the safari rooms, but some have two twin bedrooms and so are suitable for small family groups. The thatched rondavels were some of the first rooms built at Chobe Safari Lodge and are well positioned by the river. Each rondavel has an en suite bathroom, ceiling fan and small deck.
Chobe Safari Lodge’s main complex is a large thatched building which houses the reception, a large restaurant, a cocktail bar, curio shop, small salon and an activity booking office. Nearby is a large pool surrounded by loungers and a patio area with tables and chairs overlooking the river.
Activities from Chobe Safari Lodge include morning and afternoon game drives along the riverfront area of the national park, boat cruises on the Chobe River and fishing trips. Day trips to see the Victoria Falls can also be arranged. This area of Chobe National Park can be busy with visitors, especially during the dry season, so don’t expect exclusivity. However, the prolific wildlife is generally very used to high numbers of vehicles, and so many of the individual animals are relaxed, which often allows for great photo opportunities.
Day 8 – transfer from Chobe Safari Lodge to Kasane Airport
After your 2 night stay at Chobe Safari Lodge, you will be transferred to Kasane Airport where you will catch a local flight to Mapula Lodge in the Okavango Delta.
Day 8 – flight from Kasane Airport to Mapula Lodge
On arrival at the Airstrip, a representative from Mapula Lodge will welcome you and transfer you to the lodge which you be your home for the last 4 nights of your safari.
Day 8 to Day 12 – Mapula Lodge
Mapula Lodge is situated in the private, game-rich Mapula Reserve within the northern Okavango Delta. The lodge occupies a stunning position on a large tree island at the edge of seasonal floodplains, overlooking a permanent lagoon which has resident hippos.
Mapula Reserve is a private concession slightly north of the renowned Vumbura and Duba Plains concessions, on the northern side of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, in an environment that’s very similar to that found at Vumbura. Mapula is one of our favourite places in the Okavango Delta because the game in the region is varied and there can be excellent sightings of big cats and large herbivores.
The Lodge has nine roomy stone-and-thatch chalets which are reached along sandy pathways, and are well spaced and very private. They have been built on raised platforms amongst some lovely old trees, in harmony with their surroundings. The floors are constructed from old wooden beams, which extend to each chalet’s private balcony, well shaded by ancient trees. The rooms have very large, almost floor-to-ceiling meshed windows, which allow for a through breeze and great views over the lagoon and its attendant birdlife. (The rooms do have fans but these work only when the generator is on, from about 7.00am to 10.30am in the morning and between 6.00pm and 8.30pm in the evening.)
The main area of Mapula Lodge is a lovely traditional thatched building, open plan with a comfortable lounge and dining area, small library, and curio shop, and a large deck where you can sit in the shade of an ancient African ebony. On a lower deck is a small pool with sun loungers and shady spots, ideal for an afternoon nap. Nearby, the bush bar is a gathering point for pre-dinner drinks and recounting the day’s safari tales.
Activities at Mapula focus on day and night game drives, mokoro (dug-out canoe) trips, boat trips and guided walks. The open-sided game vehicles had certainly been upgraded since our previous visit and were in good shape.
The Okavango’s main ‘buffalo fence’ runs through part of the Mapula Reserve. Although this can detract from the aesthetics of some views, the game largely ignores, easily passing from one side to the other through its many gaps. Game drives operate on both sides of the fence, and the range which these can cover varies depending on flood levels. Both sides of the fence are rich in game and you are likely to see animals such as red lechwe, impala, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, steenbok, waterbuck, reedbuck, porcupine, hyena, jackal, genet, caracal and lion! Buffalo and elephant are also permanent residents in this reserve. The birding is also excellent.
Day 12 – flight from Mapula Lodge to Maun Airport to Kasane Airport
On this day, you will be transferred from Mapula Lodge to the nearby airstrip for a local flight to either Maun Airport or Kasane Airport where you will catch your international flight out of Botswana.
This is the end of your safari in Zambia and Botswana but we will still be in touch with you to make sure that your travel back home was well and safe.
